Childbirth Preparation for LGBTQ Families

The WOMB is excited to offer a new childbirth preparation series specifically created for the LBGTQ members of our community.  Samantha (Sam) Leeson, CBEd., has had the opportunity to teach prenatal classes to more than 10,000 couples over the last two decades and now has designed a class to address the excitement, care and concerns of the LGBTQ community.  Sam and her partner, Brenda, have three children between them ranging in age from 12-20 years.  It is important to Sam that her classes be fun and relaxed!!  This is an exciting time in your life and she wants to make sure that the focus is on making the learning process both lively and engaging so that you enjoy yourself but, perhaps more importantly, so that you remember the things that are important to you.

Outline for the full series classes:

  • Anatomy and Physiology of Pregnancy and Labour

What is happening within the birthing parent’s body and why do things feel the way they do?

  • Signs and Symptoms of Labour

How do you know if this is “it” or not? What to watch for and what to ignore … or ignore for as long as possible.

  • Stages and Phases of Labour

What is a “normal” labour process and how will it continue to change?  When to go to the hospital and/or page your midwife.

  • Interventions and Medications in Labour

What are interventions, why are they used, can you do anything to avoid them, and what does it all mean after the baby is born?

  • Coping Strategies

Using touch massage, distraction, breathing, music, acupressure, and conditioned relaxation exercises you’ll learn how to handle the “birth-day” of your baby!  We will also spend time discussing the pharmacologic pain management options available to the birthing parent.

  • Life postpartum

What do new babies look and act like?  What can the birthing parent expect in terms of the way the body looks and reacts after the birth?  How does a new family adjust?  How do you diaper and bathe this small wonder?

  • Breastfeeding

How do you do it?  Does it really hurt?  Why is it important?  How do you prevent problems?  Have your questions answered and learn some fun tips as well!

Group Classes: $250 + HST per couple

Emerging Mothers Postnatal Mom & Baby Group

Emerging Mothers is a group for moms with others moms facilitated by a mom and counsellor. It’s no secret that the postpartum period is a time of huge adjustment when mothers often question themselves and worry. Doing this alone or in isolation can be overwhelming and unrewarding.

Joining other moms and talking about the challenges, joys, and concerns of motherhood is one of the best ways of understanding this transition, receiving support, providing support, taking care of yourself and your needs, and reconnecting with others, yourself, and those around you. Every week, we will discuss a topic that is specifically relevant to this transition, such as sleep, identify shifts, relationship changes, reconnecting or reframing our needs, body image, and recognizing important emotional processes, such as shame, guilt, fear, and anxiety. Each class, you will be invited to share, to connect, to provide support, empathy and understanding, and most importantly, to understand yourself and grow through connecting with others’ experiences. Each class will also involve a reflection exercise to connect with the week’s topic in order to build on your strengths and gain new insight.

Come and meet with other moms and counsellors, Jennifer Lynn Walker and Michelle Brans to share your experiences and grow from connecting with others. Each series lasts six weeks.

Music Together® Classes- by TipToe Music

Music Together® Mixed Ages Classes For children ages birth through 5 years old

The mixed aged class is the essential Music Together class by TipToe Music.  It gives children from birth to age 5 the environment they need to grow and develop while interacting both socially and musically with other children of varying ages. Child development researchers have found that grouping together children of varying ages fosters natural, family-style learning. Children—even babies!—are inspired and stimulated through interaction with peers of different ages: younger children watch and imitate older ones, older children lead younger ones, and adults are happy because their children are in class together. Your baby will engage at their own level, vocalizing, moving, listening, observing, and exploring musical instruments. And any or all of your child's caregivers—parents, grandparents, nannies—can come share in the experience, both in class and at home. The whole family is welcome!

Weekly, 45-minute classes include songs, rhythmic rhymes, movement, and instrument play. These activities are presented as informal, non-performance-oriented musical experiences and are designed to appeal to a range learning styles. Our Mixed age classes make it easy for you to attend with multiple children. Classes are developmentally appropriate for your little ones and enjoyable for parents and caregivers - regardless of their own musical ability. A CD, a songbook, access to the Music Together online Family Music Zone™ and a parent/child guide are included in the cost of tuition!

Music Together® Classes by TipToe Music

Music Together® for babies ages 8 months and younger

Babies love music. This will come as no surprise to you if you’ve ever soothed your newborn to sleep with a lullaby or bounced him to the beat of your favorite song. But did you know your son or daughter is also a natural music-maker? It’s true: We are each born equipped to respond to music from a remarkably early age. There is a lot you can do to nurture your new little musician—even if you don’t think of yourself as a “musical” person. Making music together from the very beginning will lead to a lifetime of shared musical enjoyment for both you and your child.

TipToe Music's Babies-Only Class will start you on the path to becoming a musical family. Specifically designed for infants eight months and younger, this one-semester introduction to Music Together allows babies to embrace, enjoy, and express their inborn musicality. In your weekly class, you will spend forty-five music-filled minutes singing, dancing, and playing with your child, all in the company of other new parents and guided by an early childhood music specialist. You’ll learn how your child is developing musically and how you can support this growth at home. Plus, you’ll leave with lots of ideas on how to play and bond musically together and infuse music into your baby’s everyday life.

Postnatal Mom and Baby Drop In

You've just had a baby. You expected to be basking in new mom bliss.
You 're expected to be celebrating the arrival of your little one with your friends and family.

But instead of celebrating, you feel like crying. You were prepared for joy and excitement, not exhaustion, anxiety, and weepiness. You may not have been expecting it, but mild depression or anxiety and mood swings are common in new mothers.

The majority of women experience at least some symptoms of the baby blues immediately after childbirth. It is a feeling precipitated by the sudden change in hormones after delivery, stress, isolation, sleep deprivation, and fatigue. You might feel more tearful, overwhelmed, and emotionally fragile.

When: Every third Monday of the month, 1:30-3:00PM

Be loved, supported and guided through those stages into ones of celebration, joy and gratitude.
